Don't Turn Around

Horror |  3min 20sec  |  2025

Don’t Turn Around is a short horror film entirely created independently, with me serving as writer, director, cinematographer, editor, colourist and sound designer. The story follows a young girl experiencing a terrifying encounter late at night. The film was made to develop my technical skills, including colour grading and sound design, using a Sony A7 III with RS3 Pro gimbal and SmallRig handles. S-Log footage was converted to Rec.709 and graded with a blue night time tint to heighten suspense. The immersive sound design, including footsteps and underwater drowning effects, was crafted from scratch to enhance tension. The underwater sequence was captured with a GoPro Hero 12, while editing and grading were completed in Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. With no dialogue, the film is accessible to a global audience and has received over 44,000 views on YouTube, with engagement from countries including India and Pakistan, demonstrating the impact of visual storytelling and independent filmmaking.

The Journey

Drama |  4min 59sec  |  2025

The Journey is a short drama exploring the consequences of drunk driving. The film follows a man whose drinking leads to a tragic car crash involving another family, highlighting the devastating effects of impaired driving. I independently managed all key creative roles, including directing, cinematography, editing, colour grading, sound design, and set design. Filmed using a Sony A7 III, RS3 Pro gimbal, GoPro Hero 12, and DJI Mini 2 drone, I experimented with lighting, colour grading, and immersive sound design, particularly in the car crash sequence. To enhance realism, I built a crash set using scrap car parts, carefully designing the scene to amplify tension while maintaining safety. A behind-the-scenes video is included below, showing my S-Log to Rec.709 colour grading process, camera operation, and overall production workflow, giving viewers insight into my techniques and independent filmmaking process. The film has received excellent feedback for its hard-hitting narrative, demonstrating my ability to combine storytelling, technical proficiency, and practical problem-solving in an independent project.

Aftermath

Drama | Simulated News Event |  6min  |  2025

Aftermath is a six-minute simulated news-style drama produced as a training resource for UCLan nursing students’ offer-holding events. The film depicts the aftermath of a gas explosion in Preston city centre, featuring a mock news report and an on-scene interview with witness Simon Abram to add realism. I independently managed every creative stage – directing, cinematography, editing, colour grading, sound design and graphics creation. Using a Sony A7 III with Rode lavalier microphones and a Zoom H1n, I captured authentic interviews and crowd reactions. In post-production I designed all news-style graphics, lower thirds, time stamps and animations in Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects before editing in Premiere Pro. To simulate police lighting on location I improvised a DIY rig with blue fairy lights, adding sirens and ambient sounds in post to heighten realism. Coordinating a large cast safely and managing health and safety were key challenges. The film has been screened repeatedly at UCLan offer-holding events and praised for its realism, demonstrating my ability to combine storytelling, technical skill and leadership in an independent production.
